Launch
of leaflets on sight care
by Carol Aloysius The Sight Information Centre at Ratmalana this week launched an islandwide campaign to educate the public on eye care in an effort to reduce the incidence of preventable blindness in Sri Lanka. Under the program, launched on March 22, a large number of leaflets providing information and guidelines on eye care, printed in Sinhala and Tamil, will be distributed islandwide. "Our target group will include blind and partially blind persons as well as parents of young children with vision problems", a spokesman of the centre said. "Our main objective is to raise public awareness on the importance of eye care and help persons with vision problems to detect them at an early stage so as to seek treatment in time and thus prevent blindness", sources said. In addition the leaflets will also contain names and addresses of eye specialists as well as organisations who are currently involved with eye care. According to a spokesman of the Sight Information Centre, this information will be mailed to schools, hospitals and medical centres islandwide. The Sight Information Centre was set up in September 2001 with initial funding from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), for the first year of its operations. The christian church fund of Canada (CCFC) will fund the second year of its operations, states a press release from the Centre. The current program to print and distribute leaflets on sight care has been funded by Hope For Children. |
