Interior Minister praises Police

John Amaratunga, Minister of Interior has commended all ranks of the Police Department for discharging their duties impartially which enabled the peaceful conduct of the elections to 222 Local Government bodies.

The Minister states: "Though there had been reports of election related violence, several observers have expressed the view that the recent local government elections were peaceful, compared to major elections held in the past.

The people of this country would undoubtedly be grateful to the Acting IGP, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of elections as well as Police Officers of all ranks for discharging their duties and responsibilities in a fair and impartial manner in the conducting of the election.

It is significant to note that the Police had been able to create a post election environment which did not warrant the imposition of a curfew which had been a regular feature of previous elections.
