Chandrika and Nadeesha - only winners

Chandrika de Silva (reigning national women's champion) and Nadeesha Gayanthi were able to win even one match each at the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup preliminaries held in the Netherlands recently.

Chandrika beat Hungary's No. 1, while Nadeesha beat Iceland's No. 3. However, Sri Lanka, lost all three ties in the Uber Cup to Bulgaria 0-3, Hungary 1-3 and Iceland 1-3.

In the Thomas Cup, not a single Sri Lankan managed to win a match. They lost to Ukraine 0-3, Finland 0-3 and Norway 0-3.

The President of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association (SLBA), Dr. A. R. L. Wijesekera, who went as manager, said that the matches were played under the new experiment rule (five games of seven points) and only three weeks notice was given to Sri Lanka. He said: This is certainly no excuse, but our players who had never played in any tournament under this rule had to confront with it for the first time.

Dr. Wijesekera also disclosed that the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Sri Lanka has allocated US Dollars 3000 to the SLBA for "technical expertise" and the SLBA will make every attempt to get down a top coach soon from the Asian region.
