DHL express services to Afghanistan

DHL Worldwide Express has announced the commencement of operations in Afghanistan.

Uwe Doerken, CEO of DHL, said: "DHL is the first international company to offer express services in Afghanistan. By so doing, DHL is proceeding with its international strategy of expansion into new markets in direct response to our customers present and future needs. At the same time, by providing urgently needed relief goods, DHL can make its own contribution toward international humanitarian aid to Afghanistan."

The regular service, from Bahrain to Kabul, the first by civil aircraft since the formation of the new government in Kabul, will initially be with a chartered, Russian built, AN-12 aircraft. The aircraft has an 18 tonnes load capacity.

Meanwhile, DHL has won the 'Best Express Service' award for the 16th consecutive year and the 'Best Warehouse Operator' award at the Asian Freight Awards 2002. DHL claims to be the only company to have won the 'Best Express Service' award since its inauguration in 1987.

The awards were presented to winners at the Hilton Singapore recently.

The Asian Freight Industry Awards is organised by Cargonews Asia, a leading industry magazine in the region.
