Third party to manage Nestle warehouse

by Elmo Leonard

The Nestle Lanka Ltd (NLL) warehousing facility in Pannala will now be managed by a third party logistics provider, facilitating easy movement of Nestle products island-wide.

Ceylinco Sembcorp Integrated Logistics (Pvt) Ltd. (CSIL), a subsidiary of Ceylinco Consolidated has signed a contract with NLL regarding this.

In managing the warehouse in Pannala, CSIL's tasks will include handling, order management, route planning and inventory functions of most Nestle products sold in the domestic market, NLL's Managing Director Giuseppe Tarnero told a recent media briefing.

Today, logistics has gone beyond the realm of freight forwarding and warehousing. The logistics industry is now aligned with technology, to become a multi-billion dollar business worldwide. It is a fast-paced, multi-faceted, value-added supply chain service for B2B transactions on a global scale, Ceylinco Director Hiran De Silva said.

CSIL is the latest, and the 120th subsidiary of the Ceylinco conglomerate. It is a Board of Investment approved 50-50 joint venture with SembCorp Logistics India, which is a fully-owned subsidiary of SembCorp Logistics Singapore Ltd.

The parent company in Singapore is a leading integrated logistics services provider in Asia, focusing on supply chain management and offshore logistics, Ceylinco Chairman Lalith Kotelawela said. The company operates in 14 countries including China, United Kingdom and United States.

Founded 30 years ago, the company is now a US$ 6 billion diversified, Singapore government-linked conglomerate with logistics covering marine engineering, infrastructure, information technology and lifestyle businesses, President of the Singapore company, Koh Soo Keong said.

CSIL was chosen from six companies, being the second best in terms of cost, Tarnero said. SembCorp India was Nestle India's logistics partner, and had firm experience in food warehousing and distribution in Asia, he said. These were critical factors which influenced Nestle to choose CSIL.

The link would provide Nestle with cost effective solutions to storing, handling and good operational practices, Tarnero said. The system would also support modern practices such as stock rotation, based on product freshness and expiry dates as well as accurate tracking information of the product in the various distribution channels.
