A Sinhala song from Vienna Boys by Chitra Weerasinghe The talk of the town these few days has been on the magnificent performance by those twenty two little bundles of energy - Austria's `Vienna Boys Choir' who took Colombo audiences by storm with a repertoire of classical and modern music that spanned from Mozart to La Bamba, Operettas and Polkas. The show at the Hilton Colombo on March 27 was packed to capacity and graced by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando, Power & Energy Minister, Karu Jayasuriya, Sir Arthur C. Clarke, Arjuna Mahendran, Chairman BOI and several other VIPs - all of who joined in a standing ovation - not once but several times over as these boys - all between the ages of 10 to 14 sang `Indunil' that hot Sinhala favourite composed by Rukantha Gunatilleke much to the astonishment of the audiences. The song went something like this..``Indunil Gangulel Pumein sarasu lova lassana mau Lanka...". Astonished? Yes! because their pronunciation of these words was perfect and they rendered it in true Sinhala style, with not a trace of a foreign accent. And believe me the boys are supposed to have learnt the words of the song and trained to sing it only the night before the show. Was it any wonder then that there were queues of people and many children too waiting for their autographs? |
