Tiger cadres slip into Jaffna for Pongu Thamil

by Frances Bulathsinghala

The LTTE may be slipping its cadres into the Jaffna Peninsula incognito in order to have a strong contingent ready to mobilise a large public turnout for its 'Pongu Thamil' parade planned for next week. Reports from Jaffna indicate preparations for the movement of cadres into the government-held area of the Peninsula in excess of the limits imposed by the Ceasefire Agreement. These cadres are being slipped in as ordinary civilians.

Information from Jaffna reveals that LTTE supporters allegedly following orders from the LTTE has embarked on a house to house campaign announcing that families living in war unaffected homes in the Jaffna peninsula should provide food and lodging to at least two LTTE members per house. Families who have attempted to evade the request by giving the excuse that they have girls in the family and therefore could not house male cadres have been assured that, for families with girls, female Tiger members will be allocated.

This request by the LTTE Jaffna sources point out is to accommodate around five hundred LTTE members expected in the peninsula from Vanni unofficially tomorrow (8 April). Only ten members of the LTTE are expected officially, who are to be greeted by the general organized civilian groups in Jaffna when they arrive from the Vanni through the A-9 Jaffna-Kandy highway to be opened tomorrow to begin their political work in Jaffna. The LTTE office is to be opened in the vicinity of the Jaffna town.

This welcome is organized by the Tamil expatriate funded Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO), the Jaffna NGO consortium and the Jaffna Students Union.

Members of the Jaffna Students Union, known to have been instrumental in organising many pro LTTE campaigns over the years including the then controversial Pongu Thamil demonstration last year February, however denies knowledge of Jaffna households being asked to lodge LTTE members.
