Trinco oil tanks on lease to India? by P. Krishnasamy The Indian government would consider taking on lease from the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) some of the oil tanks in China Bay, Trincomalee, for commercial purposes, if there was an offer from the CPC. This was disclosed by Economic and Commerce Councellor of the Indian High Commission in Colombo, W. Ashok, who visited the oil farms last Monday, with Indian High Commissioner Gopalkrishna Gandhi. He discounted reports which appeared in the local press that India had already decided to take on lease some of the oil tanks before long. These reports were 'speculative' and 'pre-mature', he said. The Indian High Commissioner, his family and he were holidaying in Trincomalee last week and had the opportunity to visit the tank farm area, Mr. Ashok said. Co-operation in the economic and commercial sectors was mutually beneficial for both Sri Lanka and India and, in that context, India would consider taking on lease some of the tanks if there was an offer, he stated. The CPC has 99 tanks with a capacity of 12,100 metric tons each in China Bay. Of them, 15 are in use at present. The rest which are in good condition lie abandoned in shrub jungles in Trincomalee. |
