On horseback to Jaffna

by Chitra Weerasinghe

Two intrepid young women, Christine Andersen and Nihara Jayatilleke Rutnam, will soon be heading for Jaffna on horseback in an attempt at helping the children affected by the conflicts in the north.

This is a spontaneous gesture of ours. It is an idea we have nurtured for a long time and we hope and pray our efforts at improving the living conditions of the children in this area would be successful, said Christine and Nihara. Prior to their departure to Jaffna, Christine and Nihara will ride through the streets of Colombo on Sunday, May 5 collecting from the public items like shoes, clothes, milk powder, pens, pencils, caps, soap and even cash from those who may wish to contribute towards the betterment of these children.

Their tour of the streets from Independence Square will begin at 5 pm and end at the Galle Face Green and the route will cover Albert Crescent, Horton Place, C.W.W. Kannangara Mawatha, Liberty Plaza, Sir James Peiris Mawatha and Union Place.
