SLT launches Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line

by SUREKHA GALAGODA

Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) last week launched Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) in Sri Lanka a first in the South Asian region under a pilot project.

ADSL allows the users of internet to access it at a much faster speed compared to the available modems of today. It downloads information much faster than it uploads which is more useful when browsing the internet said the Group Head Marketing S. Kimura at the launch of the pilot project.

He said that SLT plans to introduce this service to Colombo Metro by August while it will be introduced to all major cities in the region by next year. Kimura added that if there is a very high demand SLT will introduce it before. He said that when the service was introduced to Japan in January last year there were only 16,000 customers but by January this year it had grown to 1.8 million customers. This is the growth of ADSL services in Japan, he said.

" ADSL is the first step in providing a total solution to our valued customers," he added.

Initially SLT will provide two packages. The offered speeds for the two packages are 2MBfor downloads and 512KB for uploads or 512KB download and 128KB uploads.

He said that since ADSL use the same copper wires that phones use, customers can not only preserve the regular phone service but make or receive a call while on the internet. Splitters on either side will split the telephone voice carried on the same twisted pair line. In addition it is much more reliable, simple and stable than analog and ISDN access.

Kimura said that ADSL can be used for downloading large files and attachments, web browsing, online shopping as well as video conferencing and a host of other services.

Speaking of future plans he said that SLT plans to introduce IP VPN service and IDC service to its customers by August.

Chief Executive Officer of SLT Suhei Anan addressing the gathering said that since customers are eagerly waiting to get the service the project was accelerated. He said that "further deregulation in the telecommunication market is expected in August."
