Move to revive handicraft industry by ELMO LEONARD There is a move to revive the local handicrafts industry, on which many thousands of rural artisans depend for a livelihood. In this regard, the government has urged National Crafts Council of Sri Lanka (NCCSL) to hold a Presidential Handicrafts Awards presentation, on the same lines of importance as the National Cinema Awards or Presidential Export Awards. Such an event, intended to uplift rural craftsmen and craftswomen, with a socio-economic impact at village level, will take place in August, at the BMICH, Colombo, adviser to NCCSL, P. G. Ratnayake said. Handicrafts are locally categorised under 20 segments - woodcarvings, and masks, batiks, brass, silver, reed, rush, cane, lacquer wares, etc. Year 1992, was the last time a handicrafts awards event was held successfully - under the direction of the late President R. Premadasa. As a prelude to such an event, handicrafts awards presentations will be held within all provincial councils. Three to 4,000 local craftpersons, are expected to vie for honours at the nation's august handicrafts awards event. The overall winner will receive a prize of Rs 50,000, while winners of all categories, will receive Rs 15,000 each. Handicrafts are exported, sold in shops for tourists, and government sponsored shops such as Laksala, Viskam Vilasitha, and private owned handicraft outlets. |
