The Colombo Magistrate's Court Lawyer's Association recently launched a project called 'The Movement Towards Peace' to play a supportive role on the current peace process between the Government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). As part of this project, around 35 lawyers, mostly from the Colombo Magistrate's Court Lawyer's Association, will visit Jaffna later this month.

Mr. Hemantha Warnakulasuriya, President of the Colombo Magistrate's Court Lawyers' Association told the Sunday Observer that he has had several discussions with some donor agencies situated both here and abroad to establish a legal aid scheme to help the poor in the North and East. Mr. M. Sivasittamparam, MP one time member of the CMCLA, has given his full blessings to the journey to the North and Mr. Raviraj, MP for Jaffna District will function as the liaison officer to ensure the mission's success. The lawyers are expected to meet the leaders of the LTTE and exchange views on the issues that divided the two major races which resulted in the present situation.

According to Mr. Warnakulasuriya, the second phase of 'The Movement Towards Peace' will be to allay the fears of the people of the South and discuss factors and problems which contribute to such fears and make them feel that the restoration of lasting peace is the only solution for both races.

The Association hopes to conduct a series of seminars and discuss matters over the print and electronic media and expose the ambiguity of those who express reservations about the outcome of the peace process.
