Peace Committees set up

by CHAMIKARA WEERASINGHE

The Interior Ministry has set up twenty five thousand peace committees throughout the country, manned by police and spirited civilians to maintain law and order in towns and villages more effectively.

The membership of each committee will comprise an Officer in Charge of the Police Station in that area besides spirited members of the public, clergy, and leading social service organisations in the area concerned.

Interior Minister John Amaratunge is said to have stepped up action in the setting up of these committees with a view to build public confidence in the police by promoting interaction and participation of both parties in maintaining law and order to combat crime in villages.

More than 1,200 committees have been set up in Colombo, and the rest in Grama Sevaka divisions.

T.F. Anandarajah, Acting Inspector General of Police said "The committees will pave the way for the police to interact with the public, which would also mean improvement in the sphere of crime prevention.

"Once the confidence has been established between the public and the police, it will lead to vigilance and dialogue from both parties. The process helps to effectively prevent violence and crime and to establish law and order," he said.

The police in another move to promote confidence in the public about their presence in townships and villages has re-introduced its foot and mobile patrols.

IGP Anandarajah said that 60,000 foot patrols and mobile patrols would be deployed.
