Electronic banking for Jaffna The Commercial Bank launched the first ever electronic banking facility to the Jaffna peninsula as the North returned to normalcy after the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the United National Front (UNF) Government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Announcing the milestone, Commercial Bank Managing Director Amitha Gooneratne told the media that on Wednesday, April 3, the bank has commissioned its first Automated Teller Machine (ATM) at the Jaffna Town Branch, which dates back to early 1900 and did not have the computer-link facility. "We are proud to be the first bank to provide electronic banking facility to Jaffna and it is the 118th ATM in the country. Jaffna was the only one of 100 branches that was not computer-linked and now we have computer-linked the branch to the island-wide network of Commercial Bank. " The ATM facility provided to the Jaffna town would be an invaluable link with the outside world the people living in that part of the country. It provides instant access not only to the bank's local network but also to nearly one million cirrus network ATMs over the world", he said. The Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) provided the Commercial Bank with a satellite facility link to make Jaffna branch in to the ATM network."We are very grateful to the SLT for the cooperation we have received from them to make it possible for the people of Jaffna to make the full benefit of our banking technology", Mr. Goonaratne added.
