Hameedias should be lauded for associating themselves in sport -Johnston Fernando by Pelham Juriansz The tenth Hameedia store was opened by Minister of Sports Johnston Fernando at Main Street, Pettah last Thursday. Welcoming the Minister was Fouzal Hameed the Managing Director of Hameedias who paid tribute to the founder of Hameedias, Althaf Rafuideen at the event. "We provide employment to about 500 people through our organisation and Johnston Fernando, the Minister is one of our best customers", said an elated Fouzal Hameed. Minister Johnston Fernando, speaking on the occasion, said that everyone should thank the late President J.R. Jayewardene who at the time when he was the Prime Minister introduced the free economy and also to the late President Ranasinghe Premadasa who continued the good work which is now being carried on by Prime Minister Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe. "In the not to distant past people were scared to come to the Fort and Pettah as it was considered to be 'unsafe', but now with the prevailing peace it is once more suitable for shopping and Main Street is in a very central spot", added the Minister. "I come from Kurunegala and there is a Hameedias store there as well" said Johnston Fernando. "We are very grateful to Hameedias who have involved themselves with sport and also offered employment to many as well as providing clothing to many. I wish their establishment the best for the future", concluded the Minister. |
