Akshyan and Zoe - men's and women's champs

Akshyan Rajasingham and Zoe Sandya Veera, both national swimmers Asian International School took top spot becoming men's and women's champions respectively in the open event at the 27th National Pentathlon Swimming Championships 2002 at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Pool yesterday. The three-day meet from April 4 was sponsored by Bank of Ceylon.

Akshyan had the fastest total timing on three strokes Butterfly, Freestyle and Individual Medley and second fastest on back and fourth in the breast. His overall timing on all events was 9:57:00 secs. better than the other 24 swimmers in the open event for men.

Zoe, who won the last year's women's open Pentathlon Championship made it two-in-a-row. This versatile swimmer who has won all other age categories under-10, under-12, under-14 and under-16 in previous years proved her class once again. Her total timing on all strokes was 11:18:25 secs. Fifteen other swimmers participated in the women's open.

In the men's open second place went to Eranga Fernando also of Asian International School (10:12:01 secs.) and Rumedha Madigasekera of St. Joseph's College was third - 10:15:90.

Uma Kavya Dharmadasa of Musaeus came second in the womens open - 11:31:55 secs. and Onitha Ranasinghe of Bishop's College was third - 11:47:25 secs.

M. I. Fahim of Elizabath Moir International School emerged champion in the boys under-14 with the fastest total timing on all four strokes and the IM - 8:43:90 secs. set the solitary record at the championship. Fahim established a record in the 100 metres breast stroke with a time of 1:21:35 secs. The earlier record was held by Kalyan Veera (AIS) - 1:21:40 secs. Fahim also became the only swimmer to win all four strokes and the IM - (Butterfly - 1:16:66 secs, Back - 1:14:45 secs., Breast - 1:21:35 secs., Freestyle - 1:04:12 secs. and Individual Medley - 2:02:22 secs.) It was high quality performance by Fahim.

The champions among the boys in their respective age groups were as follows: Under-10 - Shan Lakshitha (Royal) 3:23:57 secs. (overall timing on all events). Under-12 - Heshan Unamboowa (Trinity) - 5:46:74 secs., Under-14 - M. I. Fahim (BMIS) - 8:43:90 secs., Under-16 - Mohamed Izaz (St. Peter's) first Peterite to win a pentathlon championship - 2:41:97 secs., Under - 19 - Asanka Dharmaraja (CIS) - 2:42:78 secs.

The girls champions in their respective age categories were as follows: Under-10 - Piumi Dehara Katipearachchi (Musaeus) - 3:23:57 (overall timing on all events), Under-12 - Mayumi Raheem (Otters AC) - 5:39:00 secs., Under-14 - Udari Mendis (Mahamaya College, Kandy) - 8:43:00 secs., Under-16 - Apeksha Wijesuriya (Musaeus) - 8:56:72 secs., Under- 19 - Shanika Wimalanatha (Mahamaya, Kandy).

Royal and Trinity with 40 points each became joint boys overall champions while Mahamaya College, Kandy retained the girls overall championship with 75 points in the Pentathlon Championships.

St. Joseph's College with 35 points was placed third in the boys section while Musaeus with 53 points placed second and Bishop's College with 20 points third.

Rear Admiral, Sarath Rathnakeerthie, Eastern Naval Commander was the chief guest. The new NAASU President, Wasantha Karannagoda also graced the occasion.
