Polls for 17 LG bodies May 20

The local government polls for the Colombo Municipal Council will be held on May 20.

Deputy Commissioner (Elections), M.C. Arunthvachelvam, told the "Sunday Observer" that 13 political parties each with 59 candidates are in the fray for the Colombo Municipal Council polls.

DIG (Elections), Gamini Nawaratne, said that in accordance with the Election Law, the police will take stern action against violators to ensure a free and fair polls. There are 16 wards in the CMC which come under 11 police divisions and the police would do everything possible to maintain law and order for an incident free election.

On the same day, polls for 16 other local bodies- Kesbawa, Kalutara, Nattandiya, Mihintale, Thirappane, Hali-Ela, Moneragala, Buttala, Ratnapura and Ambagane pradesiya shabhas, Katunayaka, Peliyagoda, Panadura and Tangalla urban councils and Galle and Ratnapura municipal councils will also be held.
