New golden fence round Sri Maha Bodhi by ANJANA GAMAGE The construction of a new golden fence round the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree will be launched under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on May 23 at the auspicious time of 10.29 am. "We expect to complete the construction before next January", K.H.J. Wijedasa, President of the "Sri Maha Bodhi Ranweta Committee Project", said. According to the Ven. Pallegama Sirinivasa Thera, the Anuradhapura Atamasthanadhipathi, the golden fence will further strengthen the security round the Sri Maha Bodhi. The fence will cost a sum of three hundred lakhs. It is expected that the money will be collected from donations given by devotees. A fund titled "Anuradhapura Sri Maha Bodhi Project" has been already established at the Peoples Bank account number -0204-160-0079219. Rs. 4,740,000 - an amount collected earlier - and forty gold sovereigns which was a donation from Thailand will also be utilised in the construction of the golden fence. The money collected from the selling of Vesak cards designed by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs will also be donated to the fund, Cultural Ministry sources added. |
