Buddhist clergy complain by ANJANA GAMAGE Senior Buddhist clergy have brought to the notice of the Minister of Buddhasasana, Justice, Law Reforms and National Integration, W. J. M. Lokubandara that they are presented with low quality items when Atapirikara (offerings) are made to them. The President of the All Island Sashanarakshaka Bala Mandalaya Ven. Welamitiyawe Kusala Dhamma Nayaka Thera revealed this at a special meeting held at the Valukaramaya Temple recently. According to the Nayaka Theras most of the "Atapirikara" drapery stores have included an aluminium pot which is cut into two pieces instead of "Paththaraya". Inferior razors instead of "Deli- Pihiya", used saffron robes and unsuitable clothing materials which could not be used for Adanakadas, or as robes, have also been included among the items. It is also revealed that some of the monks in temples are directly involved in this trade and re-sell the Atapirikaras and other items back to the devotees when they are in need. Minister W. J. M. Lokubandara instructed the Secretary to the Buddhasasana Ministry, N. W. Weralupitiya and the Commissioner of Buddhist Affairs, H. W. D. Sunil to take stern action following the complaint. The Minister has also decided to register all the drapery stores selling Atapirikara and other items, under the Buddhasasana Ministry. It was also noted that the particular registration number of the stores should also be included with the items sold. |
