Tyronne for East Timor celebration

Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando, who is now on an official visit to the Maldives, will represent the Government of Sri Lanka at the independence celebrations of the world's newest state - East Timor, next week.

World leaders including United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan will fly into the eastern half of the tiny Timor Island in the Timor Sea to witness the event.

A Foreign Ministry communique added that Minister Fernando, will also meet Xanana Gusmao - the leader of East Timor's struggle against Indonesia's 25-year occupation following the withdrawal of Portuguese in 1975. Mr. Gusmao was the successful candidate at the country's first ever Presidential Elections last month.

A large number of Sri Lankans are currently engaged with the UN's attempt to build the democratic institutions in East Timor.

Gathering for peace in Melbourne

More than 450 people crammed into the Kel Watson Theatre in Burwood East, Melbourne to witness a rare meeting of Australian Sri Lankans in support of the Sri Lankan people and the current peace process between the Government and the LTTE. More than 50 local artistes took part in an evening of song and dance ranging from Bharatha Natyam, Carnatic music, classical-pop fusion and Sinhala and Tamil songs performed by members of both communities.
