'Super Fox' Dinesh Deheragoda wins Super Cars event at Talduwa This year's 'Super Fox' Dinesh Deheragoda continued his winning streak by winning the Super Cars event in his United Motors Lanka Limited's (UMLL) Mitsubishi Evolution VII at the third Talduwa Supercross 2002 organised by the Sri Lanka Army Logistics Command and Army Sports Committee in collaboration with the Motor Racing Association (MRA) and held at Talduwa last Sunday. But, the race overall was dominated by the Mobil Auto Color Racing team which won the most number of events - six in all through Lt. Col. Ravi Mayadunne, Rohan de Silva, Dinesh Jayawardena, Romanie de Silva and Indika Gurusinghe. Team Caltex had two wins. Team Castrol and Team Petes too had had two wins each. The super cars event for M, S and T cars over 1665 cc was the best of all with some of the best drivers in the fray. This ten-lap race started with Nalin Damendra Perera getting into an early lead in his Caltex Impressa and at one stage had 200 to 300 metres lead over his closest competitor Dinesh Deheragoda who progressively closed up the gap and in the eighth lap saw both drivers in a neck-and-neck race in the straights. Dinesh Deheragoda appeared to hold the edge in the corners where he got closer to Nalin D. Perera. It was in the last lap in the final 500 yards that Dinesh Deheragoda pushed hard to overtake Nalin D. Perera to reach the finish line a couple of metres ahead in a photo finish-like end. It was one of the finest races witnessed for a long time. Nalin D. Perera who was in front most of the time, was the unlucky loser as Dinesh Deheragoda's getting ahead of him in the final stretch did not provide him with a chance to stage a recovery. The fight for third place was also well contested between Carmen Thenuwara (Paragon Impressa), Rohan Speldewinde and I. Wahab with Thenuwara clinching the third spot after Speldewinde met with a mishap. |
