Gentleman of rugby capt. William Molegoda dies One of the finest gentlemen the game of rugby has ever-known and a superb wing three-quarter, Captain William Molegoda (CRNVR), passed away after a long illness to the great beyond last week and his cremation took place on May 9 with naval honours. A product of Trinity College, Kandy, Capt. Molegoda won his rugby 'colours' in 1935 and his 'Lion' in 1938 in which year he led the side. Before the Bradby Shield was introduced in 1945 for the Trinity vs Royal game, the 1938 game between the two schools will long be remembered. Royal were leading 13-0 with a few minutes remaining, but Molegoda touched down thrice to give Trinity a great 14-13 win. He won his cricket and athletic 'colours' too at Trinity. Capt. Molegoda was the first Ceylonese, besides Sidney Ratwatte, to play for Kandy Rovers, Kandy Sports Club and CR & FC whilst a schoolboy. He turned out for CR & FC from 1940 to 1951 and led the side in 1949. He went on to become the club President from 1964 to 1966. He was elected a Life Member in 1968. He captained Low-Country to win the Capper Cup in 1949 and represented Ceylon at the All-India Championships in 1948 and 1949. Some of Molegoda's contemporaries at CR were Malcolm Wright, Summa Navaratnam, Rudra Rajasingham, Roger Christoffelsz, A. K. Doray, Eardley McHeyzer, Lucien Blaze, Percy Perera, Mahes Rodrigo, Fred Kellar and Geoff Weinman to name a few. He was to later hold the highest post as President of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) in 1971 and again in 1981, and also the Chairman of Selectors too at one time. He was the President of the Sri Lanka Hockey Federation (SLHF) also, and ADC to the Governor-General of Ceylon for 16 consecutive years (up to 1977). - (L.G.) |
