Janashakthi and Airport and Aviation enter semis

by Pelham Juriansz

Janashakthi Group with a 1 nil victory over Sri Lankan Airlines and Airport and Aviation with a 5 nil trouncing of Hatton National Bank "B" secured semi final berths in the Mercantile "B" division Hockey knockout quarter finals worked out at the Malay Padang last Tuesday and Thursday.

The scorer for Janashakthi was Jamaldeen and it was a shock victory for the wooden spoonists who ended last in the League Tournament and Sri Lankan Airlines were grounded on this occasion.

In the second game Airport and Aviation ran circles round the hapless HNB "B" to record a surprising 5 nil victory.

In the 5th minute of play J. A. I. Marasinghe opened scoring for Airport and Aviation and in the 28th minute just before the short whistle Marasinghe sounded the boards again to give them a 2 nil lead at half time.

After the turnaround in the 35th minute M. Weerasinghe sounded the boards to put Airport and Aviation 3 goals ahead.

Not to be satisfied with a 3 nil lead, Airport and Aviation scored through M. Weerasinghe yet again in the 52nd minute. Two minutes later H. R. Perera broke through the bedazzled defence of HNB to score and give Airport and Aviation a well deserved 5 nil win.

M. B. Herath and Mahesh Abeywickrema controlled the game while G. H. Rupasinghe was the third umpire.
