Navy men and Air women take top honours by LESLIE FERNANDO Athletes from Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka Air Force came up with creditable performances to retain the men's and women's overall titles at the three-day second National Relay Championships conducted by the Amateur Athletic Association of Sri Lanka held at Police Park, Bambalapitiya yesterday. The sailors collected 52 points to take the top spot in the men's category while Sri Lanka Army were second with 38 points and Sri Lanka Air Force third with 33 points. In the women's overall Air Force women had 55 points to be on top followed by Navy second with 41 points and Army third with 36 points. A. Rathnayake MMV, Walala dominated in both the boys and girls relays and retained both the titles in fine style. In the boys overall A. Ratnayake MMV had 91 points, Ananda second 72 points and D. S. Senanayake Vidyalaya third with 40 points. A. Rathnayake MMV girls came first with 93 points. Senanayake MV, Madampe second 40 points and Holy Family BMV, Wennappuwa third 32 points among the girls. Champions in the men's women's boys and girls overall received challenge trophies presented by the AAA. Outstation girls athletes dominated in the relays, setting up all five records at the relay championships. Holy Family BMV, Wennappuwa established records in the under-18 4 x 100 metres relay 51.1 secs. and in the girls under-18 4 x 200 metres 1.48.8 secs. A. Rathnayake MMV, Walala accounted for two records in the girls under-20 4 x 100 metres relay 1.48.6 secs. and in the girls under-20 medley relay 4.09.5 secs. Anuradhapura MMV set the fifth record in the girls under-20 4 x 100 metres relay 51.2 secs. |
