CR steamroll over Kandy Youths 45/8

by S.M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Corrrespondent

CH and FC came up with a good performance to defeat a fighting Kandy Youths Sports Club by 45 points (5 goals, 2 tries) to 8 (1 try, 1 penalty) in their Caltex League 'A' division rugby tournament match played at Nittawela yesterday. At lemons CR and FC led 26-3.

Once against the highly inexperienced Kandy Youths side displayed a lot of guts and played with more determination than in the last game which is a sign of improvement. Outclassed both in the scrums and line outs by the more experienced and fitter Red shirts, the Kandy Youths stopped their opponents through some rib bruising tackles and good loose play.

CR and FC opened scoring early in the game through a try by flanker and expatriate player Ben which went unconverted. Kandy Youths reduced the lead through a penalty put over the fullback Indika Niyadagala.

When the game appeared to be hotting up and keen contest appeared to be on the cards, CR & FC scored off a five metre scrum through half Champika Nishanta under the post. The ball appeared to have slipped out of the players hand but the referee allowed the try much to the astonishment to those present in the ground. This was put over by stand off Roshan Peiris. This appeared to be the turning point and the Kandy Youths never recovered from it.

CR & FC scored once again through Champika Nishantha off a scrum close to the line and stand off Roshan Peiris added the extra points.

The Red shirts fourth try came in the 35th minute of play when stand off Roshan Peris fed his three-quarters and winger Kishan Musafer gave the finishing touches. Roshan Peris added the extra points. CR & FC 26-3.

Kandy Youths hit back after the turn around when prop Arvinda. Liyanage scored mid right off a kick and a fullback Indika Niyadagala failed to add the extra points, Kandy Youths 8-26.

Both teams brought in a number of replacements in the second-half but CR appeared to the fitter side.

Soon afterwards scrum half Tuan Bohran scored a snap try and this was followed by a try though skipper Asanga Rodrigo and they were half goalled. CR 40-8.

Then in the dying the stages of the game replacement winger Nuwan Kumara fell over after a Kandy Youths defender had failed to gather the loose ball. Charith Kodagoda failed to add the extra points.

Kandy Youths once again put up a gutty displace and they played with more purpose and with more exposer, they could pose serious threats to other clubs.
