Jelly for vegetarians from woman entrepreneur Everyone likes to have some dessert after the main meal, but the hassle of making it compels the housewife to look for quick desserts. Jelly tops the list as it is the easiest to make. However until recently vegetarians could not partake of the available jellies in the market as gelatine is made of animal extracts. Ms S. Weerasinghe, a vegetarian, after years of research has introduced a product called Moss Jelly. The jelly contains sea weed as its base and can be prepared by dissolving it in hot waters. It is available in three flavours - Strawberry, Apple and Orange. She said that since moss jelly sets as it cools, it can be prepared in any home even if there is no refrigerator. It can even be taken to a patient in hospital as it does not need to be refrigerated, she added. Ms Weerasinghe said that it is ideal as a dessert by itself or mixed with fruit which can be added to hot jelly to set, except pineapple which has to be cooked with a little sugar before adding to the hot jelly. She claims that moss jelly is rich in protein and calcium, and is a natural source of iodine which is an important mineral for the body. Moss jelly is ideal for the Muslim community as there is no question of halal. It is also suitable for the health conscious as it has no threat of animal related diseases. The product is distributed through Millers Ltd. and is available in over 5,000 outlets islandwide. Millers Managing Director Mr. T.D.E. Jayanetti said: "We are a distribution company dealing in international products, but after a recent policy change, we have decided to distribute quality local products as well. In our search for quality local products, we found this product." "In keeping with our policy of helping small and medium enterprises, we are happy to distribute this product which has no substitute. "We are also encouraging Ms Weerasinghe to develop other vegetarian food products. The quality of her product has enabled us to increase volumes without advertising," he added. |
