SANEI office in Colombo? The South Asia Network of Economic Institutes (SANEI) is exploring the possibility of shifting its coordinating office to Colombo from its present location in New Delhi. World renowned economist Prof. T.N. Srinivasan, who is the Chairman of the Network was in Sri Lanka recently in this regard. "All member countries have coordinating offices in their respective countries. The Marga Institute, a member of SANEI, is the coordinating body for Sri Lanka. If Colombo is selected as the next location for the SANEI coordinating office, the task of overall coordination will be handled by Marga," he said. SANEI is a regional organisation initiated and funded by the World Bank. Its role is to broaden research on economic and development issues within the South Asian region. "We want to rotate the coordinating office among all the member countries. When it comes to various rounds of proposals, we have observed that most proposals are made by the same institutes. All institutes have to be involved in the process. By rotating the coordinating office, we hope to facilitate this process," Prof. Srinivasan said. |
