Infotel Lanka 2002 in October

by Surekha Galagoda

The biggest IT event in the country, Infotel Lanka 2002, will be held from October 10 to 13 at the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre, Colombo. It is organised by the Infotel Lanka Society.

The exhibition will showcase the latest computer, communication, multimedia and Internet technology and how they can improve the way companies do business.

Information and communication technology (ICT) professionals from Japan, Sweden, India, UK and USA will be featured as keynote speakers. They will share their ideas, views and experiences on the trends and direction of IT through presentations, papers, tutorials and workshops at the IT Conference 2002, to be held from October 7 to 9.

The National Best Quality Software Awards, organised by the Sri Lanka Section of the British Computer Society, will be held this year too. The corporate presentations are scheduled for October 10-12. The awards scheme was introduced in 1998 to honour significant technological developments in Sri Lanka's software industry. The awards will be presented in two categories.

A Young IT Innovator competition will be held while a National Centre for Software Excellence will also be launched.

Key suppliers of ICTs have already taken four out of the 12 available principal sponsorship packages. Moiz Najmudeen, Managing Director of Debug Computer Peripherals, a top IT company in Sri Lanka and one of the principal sponsors this year, said: "As a principal sponsor of Infotel since 1996, we have reaped excellent benefits. I expect this year's exhibition to give us even greater opportunities to promote our company and products and attract new business."

Chairman of Infotel Lanka Society Professor V.K. Samaranayake said that Infotel was initiated 10 years ago by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe when he was the Minister of Industries, Science and Technology, recognising that ICT would soon become an integral part of economic and business growth.

Following the success of the inaugural exhibition, the Infotel Lanka Society was formed in 1994 with representatives from the industry and relevant government agencies. "We successfully organised the exhibition and conference in 1994, 1997, 1998 and 2000. The exhibition in 2000 had 187 stalls and attracted over 25,000 visitors including 2000 business visitors," Prof. Samaranayake said.
