Plans to increase solar electricity use The setting up of a Renewable Energy (RE) Fund to increase the use of solar electricity in rural villages came under discussion recently when Philippe De Renzy-Martin, Chief Operating Officer of Shell Solar BV, the Netherlands, met Karu Jayasuriya, Minister of Power and Energy, during his recent visit to Sri Lanka to assess Shell's solar operations in the island. The RE Fund would reduce the initial cost of equipment to end users and provide assistance to credit institutions which provide leasing schemes for solar electricity equipment. The fund would benefit the entire solar energy industry in Sri Lanka. During his visit to Sri Lanka, De Renzy-Martin also met Deputy Minister of Power and Energy, Sagala Ratnayake. The solar business of the Shell Companies in Sri Lanka, Shell Solar Lanka Limited has recorded tremendous growth, in only its second year of operation, and has been recognised as a benchmark program within the rural solar industry worldwide. Shell Solar Lanka has provided electricity to over 10,000 rural homes in the island. Shell Solar Lanka Limited came into operation in September 1999, when Shell Solar signed a purchase agreement with the Solar Power and Light Company to acquire the company. Shell subsequently proceeded to invest more than two million US dollars in a company that takes solar power systems straight to the customer's doorstep, installs it in the customer's home, and provides service from its 17 solar centres located throughout the island. |
