Indian journalists to help Sri Lanka

Indian journalists from the Indo- Lanka Journalists Friendship Association (ILJFA) have pledged to give due importance to tourism, economic activities and the peace process through the media channels in India.

The journalists who were touring Sri Lanka last week were very impressed with on-going development following the cessation of hostilities between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (L.T.T.E.) and the United National Front Government. The 26 senior journalists including editors and specialist writers in economics, politics and tourism who comprised the delegation got full briefing on these topics not only through dissertations by various ministers but by visiting venues both in Colombo and the provinces and holding discussions on connected issues with ministers and officials.Among other places of interest, they were taken on a tour of the Cultural Triangle to Anuradhapura, Sigiriya, Dambulla and Kandy. Their planned visit to Jaffna, however, did not materialise due to lack of adequate accommodation. However, some of the journalists visited the North on their own.

During their stay here they were accommodated at five-star hotels - and provided with transport in luxury tourist buses under the auspices of the Tourist Board.Ministers Jayalath Jayawardene, Gamini Lokuge, Chandrasekeran, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse and Governor of the Western Province Alavi Moulana hosted the journalists to dinners during their stay in Sri Lanka.
