Prime Minister returns

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe returned to the country after a successful mission abroad. The aircraft belonging to the SriLankan Airlines bringing Premier Wickremesinghe reached the Katunayake airport Saturday around 3.43 am from Zurich. He was received at the airport by Defence Minister Tilak Marapana, Interior Minister John Amaratunga.

While overseas Premier Wickremesinghe had the opportunity to address the European Union and to meet British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Mr. Bradmon Weerakoon, Secretary to the Prime Minister said that Premier's tour in Europe was very successful.

LTTE detainees to be transferre

The LTTE detainees presently kept at the Jawatta prison Kalutara are to be transferred soon to prisons near their home areas a senior officer attached to the Prisons Department said. There are about 400 detainees at Kalutara Jawatta prison, out of which about 300 are LTTE detainees.

They are kept on various charges brought against them. Some of them have been kept over a period of ten years.

The officer further said that the rest of them who are Sinhalese and Muslims would be produced at the courts in Panadura, Horana, Matugama and Kalutara.

new Mayor takes oaths

Mayor elect Prasanna Gunawardena will take his oaths as the New Mayor of Colombo on Monday, June 3 at 7.00 am in the presence of Western Province Development Minister M.H. Mohammed at the CMC premises.

While Azath Sally takes his oaths as the Deputy Mayor, former Deputy Mayor Titus Perera will take his oaths as the chief organiser. The other UNP members elected will take their oaths at 11.25 am.
