SLMM and Navy discuss monitoring boats by Ramani Kangaraarachchi Discussions were held at length between the SLMM and the Sri Lanka Naval authorities in the East on Friday and Saturday with regard to the operational aspects of the newly-appointed naval monitoring, team for Trincomalee. "For the time being the team will operate their work in liaison with the Sri Lanka Navy only in naval boats but later possibly in LTTE boats on the coast as well if the LTTE agree with Tarmo Kaupilla, Assistant Chief of Staff operations (SLMM) told the Sunday Observer. He further said that they hope to deploy the next naval monitoring team in Jaffna and Mullaitivu but did not specify any date. Asked how the monitoring team would act if it comes across any violations, Kauppila said that it is impossible to give an answer because it would depend on how the security forces and individuals would react to the situation. Meanwhile, naval authorities said that they need a minimum of nine monitors to complete the mission since there are three naval boats operational in the sea for twenty-four hours. Therefore it will be difficult to manage with only two monitors in the East. However, they wish to increase the number of monitors in due course, hoping to commence operations with available resources from Tuesday, according to defence sources. |
