Forty five competitors for Commonwealth Games by LAL GUNESEKERA Sri Lanka will send a 62-member contingent, comprising 45 competitors and 17 officials for the 17th Commonwealth Games to be staged in Manchester, England from July 25 to August 4. The Lankan contingent is scheduled to leave for England on July 20. A spokesman for the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Sri Lanka told the Sunday Observer that the National Sports Council headed by Ravi Jayewardene has met and finalised the names of the competitors and officials for the Commonwealth Games and that the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Johnston Fernando, will have to give the "greenlight" with the "list" being sent to him within the next few days. He said that Sri Lanka will be represented in nine disciplines. They are - Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Netball, Squash, Rifle Shooting, Weightlifting, Swimming and Gymnastics. There are 15 athletes, four boxers, two shuttlers, two squash players, one gymnast, one swimmer, six shooters and 12 in the netball team, while the number of weightlifters have not yet been settled and even in shooting the numbers may increase or decrease. |
