Army win Women Novices Boxing Meet by LESLIE FERNANDO Army women pugilists displayed superior boxing skills to win three bouts and had two runners-up out of six bouts at the inaugural Women Novices Boxing Meet conducted by the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka and held at the Royal College ring yesterday. Army won the flyweight, pinweight and the bantamweight categorises and the other two weight classes lightfly and flyweight in split decisions. Slimline SC won the light flyweight and the flyweight categories. The sixth bout went to Chintha Weerasinghe of Seevali BC who beat Janaka Senanayake of St. Luke's BC. All bouts were keenly contested. The crowd witnessed good boxing fare served up by the women pugilist. The best bout of the day was between Anusha Kodituwakku of Slimline BC and B. K. Sandya Manel of Army in the Light flyweight category. Anusha turned the form book upside down by outpointing Sandya. For her fine display, Anusha adjudged the best boxer. Meanwhile Nelka Shirmala of Police was selected as the best loser in the bout against N. A. N. Hemanthi in the pinweight class semi-finals. Mrs. Lalitha Weerakoon wife of late DIG Dharmasiri Weerakoon was the chief guest. |
