India, Pakistan trade mortar, artillery fire JAMMU, India, June 1 (Reuters) - Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged fresh artillery and mortar fire across their frontier in Kashmir on Saturday as global pressure mounted on the nuclear-armed foes to avert war, an Indian defence official said. The firing came as Western governments urged tens of thousands of their nationals to leave the region and warned the neighbours of the disastrous consequences of nuclear war. Troops exchanged heavy mortar fire in the Kerni sector in Poonch district in the disputed Himalayan region. They also exchanged sporadic mortar and heavy machinegun fire in Rajouri and Naushera districts, the official said. "Sporadic artillery exchanges took place in Baramulla, Kupwara and Kargil districts," the official said. There there were no reports of casualties in the late Friday and early Saturday clashes. India and Pakistan, who have massed a million troops on their border, regularly exchange fire across their frontier in Kashmir. But the intensity of the exchanges has increased sharply since a mid-May attack on an Indian army camp by suspected Pakistan-based militants fighting India's rule in its part of Kashmir. |
