India says grenade kills 1, wounds 15 in Kashmir SRINAGAR, India, June 1 (Reuters) - One person was killed and 15 wounded when unidentified militants threw a grenade at a security patrol in the heart of Srinagar, summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Indian police said on Saturday. The attack, late on Friday evening, came amid mounting fears of war between nuclear-armed foes India and Pakistan over what New Delhi says is Islamabad's support for Muslim militants fighting Indian rule in disputed Kashmir. A police spokesman said militants lobbed a grenade at a Border Security Force patrol vehicle. "The grenade missed its target and exploded on the road injuring 16 people including three BSF personnel." He said one of the wounded civilians died in hospital. No militant group has claimed responsibility. There are fears that a big attack by militants in Indian Kashmir could be a trigger for war between India and Pakistan, who have around one million troops massed along their border. |
