Emirates, Colombo recognised for coping with extreme adversity

The Colombo office of Emirates has been honoured with an award for "Coping with extreme adversity" in 2000 - 2001 by Emirates, the international carrier of the United Arab Emirates.

The award, presented at the airline's annual Reservations Conference in Dubai, recognises the efforts of Emirates' Colombo station in the aftermath of the July 24, 2001 attack on the Bandaranaike International Airport and the events of September 11 in the USA.

It was received on behalf of the station by Chula Abeysinghe, Ticket Office Manager, and Janaka Hewavitharana, Reservations Manager at Emirates Colombo from Scott McMahon, Head of Revenue Optimisation at Emirates and Peter Quinn, the airline's Manager Reservation Services.

Emirates Area Manager Sri Lanka and the Maldives Tissa Bibile said: "The second half of last year was particularly trying for airlines operating to Colombo. The high insurance surcharges made it unviable to maintain normal services and the industry was swamped in gloom."

"We were lucky to have the full support of our head office in Dubai, and the determination of my staff enabled us not only to weather the storm, but also to quickly bounce back to normal. This award is really a tribute to the Emirates spirit."

Separate airport terminal

Meanwhile, Emirates has announced the opening of a new First and Business Class check-in terminal at Dubai International Airport, the only one of its kind in the world.

The facility is designed to speed departing travellers smoothly onto flights with minimum formality and fuss. Purpose-built between Departures and Arrivals, it is the only separate airport terminal in the world catering to premium flyers, the airline said in a news release.

As well as six First and 10 Business Class check-ins, the 1600 square metre facility offers eight express check-in counters for flyers with only hand luggage.

The new terminal is expected to handle over 400,000 First and Business class customers a year. Access is restricted to passengers flying Emirates First or Business Class, SriLankan Airlines Business Class and Skywards Gold and Silver members - regardless of which class they fly in.
