E-learning to bridge skilled manpower shortage

The e-learning Centre of Singapore Informatics Computer Institute, a subsidiary of Informatics Holdings Ltd., Singapore was inaugurated in Sri Lanka recently by Minister of Mass Communication Imthiaz Bakeer Markar.

Prof Lakishman R. Watawala, Singapore Informatics Chairman told the gathering that according to International Data Corporation estimates, the IT training market in the Asia Pacific outside Japan will increase to US$ 2.5 billion in 2004 from US$ 981 million in 1999. Over 22 million IT workers are needed to fulfil this growth rate.

Singapore Informatics is engaged to bridge the gap between formal educational institutions and market demands, thus helping to bridge the shortage of skilled manpower within Sri Lanka and the region. Informatics Holdings, Singapore with over 400 centres in 38 countries, is a global leader in IT education and training.

The inauguration of the e-learning centre and the Internet Virtual Campus by the Minister will enable Sri Lanka to take advantage of the Internet application - online education, Prof. Watawala said.

The Internet Virtual Campus will provide education and training for students and school leavers, companies, the government and individuals. This will open the pathway for Sri Lankan students to register for university degree programme in the UK, USA and Australia.

The provider of e-learning 'Purple Train. Com', a fully-owned subsidiary of Informatics Holdings, Singapore, has over 1000 courses including degree, MBA. PhD, skills development courses, certificate and diploma, business and IT courses. These courses will now be available through the Internet Virtual Campus and students could use the e-learning centre to undertake their studies.

Some of the advantages of e-learning are the flexible mode of learning, promoting interactive learning with lecturers and students from overseas countries, using the online media to obtain course material, submit assignments, engage in chat sessions, put questions and obtain answers on the bulletin board and e-mail facilities.
