Ceramics Cluster to promote industry through web portal

'Sri Lanka Ceramics', an industry web portal devoted to the ceramics industry of Sri Lanka, was launched recently by Minister of Industries Rohitha Bogollagama. The event was organised by the Ceramics Cluster.

Speaking at the event, the Minister pointed out areas of concern for the ceramics industry including the need to improve productivity and the need to create a highly skilled workforce at the tertiary level to fuel growth. He also commended the industry cluster for working together to make this possible for the industry.

Secretary to the Ministry of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion Ranjith Fernando, who was the guest of honour at the event, touched on the role of the Ministry as a facilitator in the growth of the industry and spoke about the industrial task forces which were developing medium-term plans with a view to growing the various sectors that fall under the Ministry's purview.

Chairman of the Ceramics Cluster Sunil Wijesinha explained the concept of a cluster vs. an association. He further explained the reasons for the cluster to develop a web portal as a key to project the quality of the Sri Lankan ceramics industry in international markets.

Rohith Udalagama, Managing Director of LankaCom Services, which was instrumental in developing the site, said the site will be hosted, managed and globally mirrored on 25 servers so that access from any country is possible with quick download times. LankaCom is a subsidiary of Singapore Telecom.

The web portal will project the image of Sri Lanka's ceramic and porcelain products and will serve as a key information source for both international and local buyers, suppliers, manufacturers, investors, academics and others interested in the industry. The portal will also track and promote the growth of the industry through coverage of news features and industry trends and will provide a forum for discussion and information exchange. Specific site architectural features include a directory of manufacturers, raw material and inputs suppliers, investment opportunities, information on research and academic institutes associated with the ceramics industry, a calendar of upcoming events, list of industry publications, related government and other industry links, and an opinion poll on areas of industry interest and concern.

The Ceramics Cluster includes members from the private sector engaged in the manufacture of tableware, sanitaryware, tiles and figurines, government agencies, academia, allied and supporting industries and serves as a proxy for the industry and a forum for examining the issues critical to the competitiveness of the industry.
