New sound in town

Cross Section with Antoinette and Rodney is the new dance outfit with a strong vocal line up that will be in action at the forthcoming Rotary Dance which will be held at the Lanka Oberoi Ballroom on June 29. Formed just two months ago the band is now sought after to play for dances, weddings and corporate functions. This highly professionally talented and versatile dance band played for the Ceylon America Society annual dance that was held in May and just completed playing for the Sri Lanka UK Association Queen's Birthday Ball.

Some of the other prestigious dates on the cards for Cross Section are the scheduled Tamil Union Dance, Ms. Sri Lanka Contest and Dinner Dance and the Retired Police Officers Annual dance, in the immediate future.

Actually Cross Section takes over from where the maestro veteran pianist Peter Prins left off.

"Peter called it a day as far as leading his band The Peter Prins Combo was concerned and with his blessings I took over the band. He was frankly one of the nicest band leaders to work with and he has been for a long time urging me to take over. So along with Rodney Rabot and Raj Emmanuel the drummer I invited pianist Harsha Makalande and keyboardist Hilary Christie to join us and we now have the bassist Timal Jayamanne, since Patrick Davidson the bassist with Peter opted to move out" says Antoinette de Alwis who in the early years led the successful band Antoinette and the Gaylords managed by her husband Lucky.

It goes without saying that music runs in the veins of Antoinette who is now renowned for her vocal artistry and leads a church choir too, singing for the Sunday services and at weddings. Cross Section as the name implies plays a repertoire of strict tempo dance music, pop, latin, baila rock'n roll, reggae, semi rock and country and with the band's strong vocal line up you will be compelled to dance till dawn.

Rodney Rabot - versatile vocalist/guitarist who shares the load of the vocals with Antoinette was with the Peter Prins Combo and was one time member of Amazing Grace, the Jetliners and led his own band Climax. Antoinette says she's happy to have him in the band and is grateful for his support.

Pianist Harsha Makalande needs no introduction in our music scene. His piano and keyboard artistry is remarkable and he led his own band Harsha and Khrome and was contracted to play at the Hilton when it was first opened.

Hilary Christie vocalist/ keyboardist now on a solo/duo/trio career is happy to be back with Antoinette as he was a member of her early band Gaylords. Himself a versatile vocalist he also shares the baila sessions with the drummer.

Raj Emmanuel the drummer of the Peter Prins Combo is strong in his playing giving the band the thrust to be in active action on stage. A talented vocalist he handles the most of the bailas.

Timal Jayamanne the young bassist is quite a talented vocalist who contributes to the interesting sound of Cross Section. One time member of Rage, Timal is happy to work with this versatile Cross Section.
