Students of the Basic Level (148) classes of the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (former Ceylon Hotel School) conducted a shramadana to uproot 'Ulex Europeaus' at Horton Plains National Park last month. The plant is considered a threat to the environment and is growing widely. It was difficult due to the thorny nature of the plant. Students had to use hard gloves and ropes to uproot the invaders. With the constant weather changes and the area getting covered in mist, students encountered many difficulties in carrying out their tasks. Twenty eight students volunteered for the shramadana campaign which was spearheaded by Kanchana Nanayakkara and was supervised by the park warden. The campaign was organised by Prageeth Manjula Amarasinghe, Chanaka Liyanage and Pradeep Wijesinghe, the students of the school and is an annual event in the school's calendar. Based on the success of the recent campaign the organisers hope to carry out the shramadana campaign twice a year in a bid to control the growth of Ulex Europeaus. They also invite institutions and organisations to take the necessary steps to conduct work camps and stem the growth of the wild plant. Their services are available to any Institution interested in sponsoring similar work camps. |
