Letter to Tyronne ; Colin Powell backs peace effort US Secretary of State Colin Powell has written personally to Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando promising Washington's support for the Government's current peace initiative. The Secretary of State has also accepted the Foreign Minister's invitation to visit Sri Lanka. "The United States will continue to support the efforts of Sri Lanka to achieve a peaceful settlement of your country's long conflict. I wish you and the Sri Lankan people every success in this difficult but important task", Mr. Powell has said in his letter referring to the discussion he had with Mr. Fernando in Washington last week. During his visit to the US, the Foreign Minister met President Bush and State Secretary Powell and briefed them about the current situation in Sri Lanka at length, a Foreign Ministry communique said. "Thank you very much for your kind invitation to pay a visit to Sri Lanka. I hope that at some point in the future my schedule will allow me to visit your beautiful country", Mr. Powell has said. |
