Italian engineers repairing generator by ANTON NONIS Italian engineers responded to a call by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) by arriving in the country last week to attend to a major thermal power generator at Kelanitissa power station. According to an official at the Kelanitissa station, the generator with an installed capacity of 115 Mega Watts, had suddenly developed some kind of unusual sounds and vibrations in it prompting that it might lead to the generator being damaged. This particular thermal generator was repaired and serviced by Italian engineers last month. The machine was plugged into the national grid on May 24. It supplied power round-the-clock till June 3. Thereafter, the machine appeared to be erratic and the CEB was compelled to bring it to the notice of the Italian experts. Two Italian engineers are on the job, continuously working on it. According to the official at Kelanitissa, they had to shut off the machine from functioning once irregularities occurred in it fearing that the machine might get damaged if allowed to operate in that state. |
