Northern fishermen harassed by Indian poachers by P. Krishnasamy Poaching and other illegal activities by Indian fishermen in the Northern territorial fishing waters are now posing a major threat to the livelihood of the local fishermen of those areas. President of the Union of Northern Fishermen's Co-operative Societies, S.Thavaratnam, told the "Sunday Observer" that their prospects of making large catches in their familier fishing grounds, after the lifting of the 10 year long security restrictions last week, were totally shattered and they encountered large scale poaching by Indian fishermen of the seas extending from Thondamanaru to Point Pedro and the off-shore islands, he lamented. Besides poaching, the Indian fishing trawlers have also either destroyed or taken away with them fishing nets of the Northern fishermen which are expensive hard-earned assets amidst great financial constraints, he said. The Union has made representatives to Minister of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugees, Dr.Jayalath Jayawardene, the Ministry of Fisheries and other concerned authorities concerning the matter but nothing has so far been done to prevent the maritime encroachments, it was further informed. |
