Vice Chancellors positive over peace process by DEEPAL WARNAKULASURIYA Vice Chancellors from thirteen universities assembled recently at the University of Jaffna, for its monthly meeting held after a lapse of nearly 15 years, there. A significant feature was that the Vice Chancellors were unanimous and positive in their stance on the peace process but some expressed that many more things had to be done to establish greater understanding between the North and the South for the restoration of peace in the country. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, Prof. Kapila Gunasekara, commenting on the Jaffna trip said that from what they had observed during their short stay of almost two hours, it was apparent that everything was returning to normalcy and the people were fully hopeful of a permanent solution to the longstanding ethnic conflict. He said that goodwill missions and mutual understanding helped to clear misconceptions and pave the way for a lasting peace. Prof. Dayantha Wijesekara, Vice Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa, said that "It is true that seeing is believing. But, what has already taken place, what has to be done and what should not take place henceforth are matters that should be considered by both parties." He said that people not only in Jaffna but also in Colombo and other areas long for peace. He said there was a long way to go and much more to be done before the final target was achieved. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna, Prof. Ranjith Senaratne, said that it was indeed a great opportunity to see the survival of our own people in the North. "It was heartening to see displaced people rushing to their own places they had once abandoned. They were optimistic of a permanent peace and now it is left for both parties to make peace a reality," he added. |
