Veteran journalist's silver jubilee

Rohan Welivita, the well known media personality will celebrate his silver jubilee as a mediaman on June 26. He is the son of journalist Albert Welivita of Boralugoda, Hanwella.

Rohan entered as a stage actor in 1977 playing a role in the stage drama "Siripala and Lionel" produced by Kusumchandra. His stage drama based on "the adventure of Tomsoyar" rose him to the heights of a director of stage play and also showed his ability of good acting by playing the main role of that stage play. With the success of his first stage play he continued taking famous English dramas to the Sinhala stage.

He also entered the cinema by playing in "Biththi Hathara" directed by Parakrama de Silva, "Mihidum Salu" directed by Prof. Sunil Ariyarathne and "Yahalu Yeheli" directed by Ms. Sumithra Peiris.

In 1982, he had the luck to join Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation as an assistant producer at the Children's unit for SLRC chairman Mr. M. J. Perera had seen the stage drama Tom Soyar directed by Rohan. He was among the artistes to have won the "Rana Mayura" for Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation awarded by Sri Lanka National Youth Council. The award went for his one episode teledrama "Rajjuruwo Udai, Udai" in 1983.

That was the first time such an award was designed in Sri Lanka for television media in Sri Lanka. His "Bethlehem Geethaya" telecast in 1984 once again won the Rana Mayura Sammanaya. He was recognised by the OCIC when he was awarded the best Television producer award in 1985 for his "Karol Karaththaya" to which the script was written by Jakson Anthony. He once again won the OCIC award in 1986 for his one episode teledrama "Maya Meeduma" in which Kamal Addaraarachchi played the main role.

He was the managing director of program ITN and later first News Director of the Local News of the same channel.

He went to Germany in 1998 on a scholarship and resigned to commence his own Lakvahini TV channel, but could not implement it. He also edited a book on "Vidyuth Madya Kalawa" in the year 2000 and commenced "Laknews". He is now busy re-organising the "Fine Vision", his father found some years ago.
