New cancer care centre

A novel concept of a cancer care centre, Sathya Sai Suwa Sevana, at Kudaluwila, Hanwella, will be declared open by the Minister of Power and Energy, Karu Jayasuriya and Chairman of the Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation (East Asia and Pacific), Shri Ryuko Hira, on July 6.

The centre built on a threeacre land donated by philanthropist and businessman, J. S. Senarath, comprises two wards to accommodate 50 inmates besides ancillary buildings and a Sarva Dharma Shrine with separate facilities to perform religious rites for the inmates, relatives and others according to their respective faith.

According to M. Wanniyasekaram, Central Co-ordinator of Sathya Sai Seva Organisation, the centre could accommodate 50 deserving acute cancer patients with all medical facilities, affection, support and consolation free of charge.

Poson Bhakthigee cassette

A special cassette containing Buddhist bhakthigee (devotional songs) titled Thisarana Urumaya will be launched tomorrow (24) at Mihintale to mark Poson Poya day by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Education and Cultural Affairs in collaboration with the Tower Hall Theatre Foundation.

The cassette is launched on the direction of the Minister of Human Resource Development, Education and Cultural Affairs, Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku.

Eminent music directors in the country as Sangeeth Nipun Sanath Nandasiri, Rohana Weerasingha, Victor Ratnayake and Samantha Perera have provided the music to the cassette and the bhakthi gee have been sung by the popular singers Sanath Nandasiri, Victor Rathnayake, Sunil Edirisinghe, Edward Jayakody, Karunarathne Divulgane, T.M. Jayaratne, Malkanthie Nandasiri, Abeywardena Balasooriya, Niranjala Sarojini, Deepika Priyadarshani, Athula Adikari, Samitha Mudunkotuwa, Asanka Priyamantha Peiris and Samantha Perera.

Lions on peace mission to Jaffna

The Lions Club of Sri Jayawardenapura, Kotte, will tour Jaffna and distribute 2,000 umbrellas among school children as a token of peace. A ceremony to mark the occasion will be held today (June 23) at 9.30 a.m. at the Duraiappa Stadium, Jaffna, by handing over a peace message from the South to the North.

The chief guest will be the Government Agent of Jaffna K.N. Shanmuganathan with the Jaffna Mayor S. Kandiah as the Guest of Honour.

The mission is sponsored and organised by the Bank of Ceylon in association with the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation and Shaw Wallace and Hedges Co. Ltd.

The Chairman of the mission Mangala Boyagoda said its objective was to instil the concept of peace in the minds of children to restore unity and harmony among all communities in the country.

The message of peace is inscribed in all three languages and the colours of the umbrella depict the different political parties stressing the importance of a lasting peace.
