Isipatana swamp Trinity 43/8

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Corr

It was crying time again for Trinity as Isipatana inflicted a crushing 43 points (4 goals, 3 tries) to 8 (1 try, 1 penalty) defeat on Trinity in their inter-school rugby match played at the Trinity College Rugby Stadium at Pallekelle yesterday. At the breather Isipatana were in command leading 26-3.

This was Trinity's biggest defeat this season and most probably the heaviest against Isipatana College since these two school started their fixture thirty years ago. This was also Trinity's fourth successive defeat and they have already lost to Wesley, Vidyartha and St. Anthony's this year.

Isipatana used their forwards to blunt the attack of the Trinitians and thereafter the back division took over to score. The Pathans it must be said exploded into action right from the start and looked a winner from the outset. The cohesion between the forwards and the back division provided the main thrust behind Isipatana's drive and to which the Trinitians had no answer. If the Lions had tackled with more aggressiveness, they could have restricted the score, the way they did in the first twenty minutes of the second half.

It was Trinity who opened scoring early in the match through a penalty put over by hooker Pragetth Wasalathanthri and that was the only scoring they could do in that half.

But this lead was short lived as Isipatana soon got their act together with vengeance and kept mounting the score. They scored first off a three-quarter move and winger Dinesh Kumar touched down close to the left post and hooker Sathil Kumar added the extra points for the Pathans to snatch the lead. Isipatana 7-3.

Isipatana now mounting a non stop attack on Trinity's defence and scored again when the three-quarters took over from the forwards and moved the ball around with the ball going down the line through Chalanka Thejas, wingers Dinesh Kumar and Duminda Samaranayake and centre Gayan Fernando completing the move by touching down under the post. But they failed to add the extra points as Trinity's lock forward Dushan de Silva charged at the kick at goal and the ball rebounded.

Isipatana's third try was fashioned by the forwards who kept attacking relentlessly and lock forward Anuradha Dharmatillake scored under the post. Hooker Santhil Kumar added the extra points.

Just before the short whistle Isipatana's winger Dinesh Kumar intercepted a pass and breezed his way to score under the post and added the extra points himself.

After switching ends, Trinity appeared to come back into the game as they tackled with more purpose and for once the Pathans scoring machine was stalled for a good 23 minutes in the second half.

In the 21st of the second half Trinity scored their only try of the match when hooker Prageeth Wasalathanthri taking the short tap, made the break to send prop forward and skipper Sajeewa Mendis to score mid left. But Wasalathanthri failed to add the extra points.

But there was no stopping for this Isipatana side as they once again got into the scoring mood to have the Lions in a spin. First it was Santhil Kumar who had an outstanding game scored off a forwards rush but failed to add the extra points.

Two minutes later No.8 Anuranga Walpola powered his way to score under the post and hooker Santhil Kumar added the extra points.

With the Trinity's defence now in tatters winger Duminda Samaranayake virtually waltzed his way to score by the left post and Santhil Kumar missed an easy kick at goal.

Aruna Jayasekera refereed.

Isipatana won the 2nd XV game 10-5.
