Amrith de Soysa to play in British Junior Golf Tourney

by LAL GUNESEKERA

Young Amrith de Soysa (15), who is one of the brightest prospects in recent years, will play in the British Junior Open Golf Championship to be staged in Scotland in July.

De Soysa was 30th out of 79 players when he was only 13 years at the British Junior two years back, but since then has been doing exceptionally well. He was sixth at the Singapore Junior Opens in 2000, sixth at the Malaysian Junior the following year (2001) in which year he won the Under-15 category at the East India Junior in Calcutta and finishing fourth in the Under-18 category. He won the Under-15 category at the All-India Junior Championship earlier this year in Calcutta and was eighth in the Under-18 category.

Meanwhile, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh will send four-member teams for the Sri Lanka Amateur Open Championship to be staged at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) from August 31 to September 7, while Nepal, Malaysia, Singapore will send two players each. There have been no response as yet from South Africa and the Kuwait and Dubai Golf Clubs.

Anura Rohana and Lalith Kumara may compete at the Singapore Open Amateur Championship early August, while both these players together with Tissa Chandradasa (Dubai's No. 1) has been asked to make themselves available for the Asian Games to be staged in South Korea in September. The fourth member is likely to be Amrith de Soysa.

The revived Sri Lanka Open Championship is scheduled to be staged at the Victoria Golf Club in Digana from July 9 to 12.
