Inaugural Veteran Women's Basketball Tourney from July 20-27

The Veteran Women's Basketball Association of Sri Lanka (VWBASL) will be conducting its inaugural basketball tournament for women from July 20-27 at the Police Park Basketball Courts, Colombo 5.

Ms Priyanthie Fernando, Managing Director of Prenita Fashions, Crystals and Priti Shoes and Bags who is a former national netball and Basketball player has generously come forward to sponsor this tournament.

Named the "Prenita" All Island Basketball Tournament for women is open to all women over 25 years as at December 31, 2002. i.e. a player born on or before 1.1.77 is eligible to participate.

Ms. Anne Weerakkody, Tournament Secretary, addressing the media at Prenita Fashions showrooms at Thurstan Road, said that the tournament will be conducted under the auspices, rules and regulations of the International Basketball Federation with the following modifications.

The game will consist of 4 X 10 minute quarters, with a maximum of 12 on the team list.

The tournament is open to all clubs, mercantile firms and statutory bodies. Even teams from Batticoloa and Jaffna are expected to take part. Accommodation will be provided.

About 10 teams are expected and some teams from Kandy as well.

The tournament is a preparation for the World Master's Game in Australia from October 5-13 for which over 30 teams are expected to participate in October, "Down Under".

There are some ex Ceylon and Sri Lankan players like Viviene Jansz, Melanie Van Cuylenberg and Dr. Olga Mendis in Australia who are hoping to enter.

Entry forms for the local tournament could be obtained from any of the members or the President Ms. Rio Ramlan on 829055 or Ms. Anne Weerakkody on 077-764664 or any office bearer of the VWBASL. The closing date for entries will be Wednesday, July 10.

Trophies will be awarded in memory of two basketball stalwarts - the late Joyce Thurairatnam and the late Kusuma George nee Gunawardene.

Special trophies will also be awarded to the 'Best Offensive player', 'Best Defensive Player' and Best All-Round Player' of the tournament.

The Chief Guest at the finals will be Ms. Priyanthi Fernando and the Guest of Honour Gyrike Perusinghe, Chairman of the Independent Television Network and a former Sri Lankan basketball coach.
